Ndau FM brings local-language information and stronger connectivity to rural Chipinge

For residents of Garahwa in Chipinge, Zimbabwe, access to information once meant navigating unreliable radio signals and relying on telecommunications networks from neighbouring Mozambique. Today, Ndau FM is helping the rural border community access news in its own language, receive early warning information and connect with essential services.

Officially launched on 24 September 2026 at a gathering of the Government of Zimbabwe, UNESCO, development partners and community members to commemorate the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI), Ndau FM is expanding access to information in the Ndau language, strengthening community dialogue and helping residents of Garahwa prepare for disaster risks.

Broadcasting in Ndau, the community radio station places local voices and priorities at the heart of information sharing. Its development has also helped catalyse investments in telecommunications and renewable energy, demonstrating how community media can contribute to wider rural development.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Hon. Dr Soda, emphasised that meaningful access to information begins with language.
